St. Corban’s Coding Club Excels at Microsoft Ireland
Our enthusiastic boys from the St. Corban’s Coding Club had a fantastic and memorable day at Microsoft Ireland. After weeks of dedicated participation in the Dream Space Programme, they proudly showcased their innovative STEAM and coding projects using Micro:bits on Friday, 29th May.
This was a wonderful opportunity for the boys to present their ideas in an inspiring environment. Their projects focused on real-world applications, linking science, technology, engineering, art, and maths (STEAM) with global sustainability goals.
One of their standout projects involved designing and building SMART Recycling Bins for plastic bottles and cans. Inspired by our school’s ongoing RETURN scheme, the boys brought this initiative to the next level by designing and programming SMART bins, using coding and Micro:bits, to count plastic bottles and cans as they are deposited into the bin, signal when they are full, and communicate with another Micro:bit to initiate emptying using radio functionality. This project promotes recycling and environmental awareness while integrating technology.
Another innovative project was the creation of a school pedestrian crossing with traffic lights, aimed at promoting road safety, inclusion, and ensuring safe journeys for everyone in our school community.
Throughout these projects, the boys developed essential skills such as coding, problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity. These experiences ignite curiosity, build confidence, and inspire the next generation of thinkers, creators, and innovators.
We are incredibly proud of all the hard work the boys put into their projects. They did an outstanding job presenting them and should be very proud of their achievements.
Ms. Pearson, who facilitates the Coding Club, is especially proud of the boys’ accomplishments. Many thanks to Ms. Ahern and Ms. O’Brien for also accompanying the boys to Microsoft Ireland on the day.
It was a truly proud and memorable experience for everyone involved.
